Perception

Albert Einstein said that “Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.” Everything you see, hear, feel, taste and smell is an interpretation of what’s outside, and created entirely inside your head. We tend to believe that this interpretation matches very closely to the external world but nothing could be further from the truth.

It is the brain that “sees”, and in some important ways what it sees does not reflect the actual truth. We are all living in our own reality simulations – abstractions – that we construct as a result of both what we perceive with our senses and how our brains modify this perception.

Such things as color, smell and taste are not properties of the outside world itself, but rather a category created by the process of perception. Two people may look at the picture taken above for example and see completely different things. A friend of mine thought that the picture was taken underwater while someone else was not pretty sure if this was a purely computer-generated product.

What is the truth? For me to know, for you to find out…
